Emerald, derived from the word smaragdus, meaning green in Greek, It was documented that emerald was mined in Egypt as early as 330 B.C. Cleopatra is known to be a major admirer of emerald. The availability of high-quality emerald is rare; accordingly, treatments to improve emerald clarity are common practices.

The 1759 carat Guinness Emerald Crystal. The stone was found at the Coscuez in Colombia and is one of the largest gem-quality emerald crystals in the world. Today it is part of the collection of the Banco Nazionale de la Republica in Bogotà, Colombia
The splendid 167.97 carat Mackay Emerald was mined in Muzo, Colombia. The largest cut emerald in the National Gem Collection, it is set in an Art Deco diamond and platinum necklace designed by Cartier Inc. In 1931, Clarence H. Mackay presented the necklace as a wedding gift to his wife, Anna Case, a prima donna of the New York Metropolitan Opera from 1909 to 1920. The piece was donated to the Smithsonian Institute by Mrs. Anna Case Mackay in 1984.

The Chalk Emerald
The Chalk Emerald
The Chalk Emerald is a 37.82 carats Colombian emerald. The royal rulers of Baroda State, a princely state in India, once owned the emerald. In the 20th century, the emerald was recut from its original weight of 38.40 carats and set in a ring designed by Harry Winston. The ring was donated by Mr. and Mrs. O. Roy Chalk to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in 1972 and is part of the Smithsonian's National Gem and Mineral Collection.
The Patricia Emerald is a large and superbly colored specimen. At 632 carats, the twelve-sided crystal is considered one of the great emeralds in the world. Mined in Colombia in 1920 and named after the mine owner's daughter. The stone has some flaws, but this is common in emeralds. The emerald resides in the New York Museum of Natural History.
